greek life offers...

Scholarship...
Your education is the primary reason you came to The University of South Dakota. It is also a primary concern of the Greek community here at USD. The Greek community at USD strives for the best in a college education, often placing above the All Men's and Women's GPA's. Chapters assist members in achieving their full academic potential by providing programs such as study skills, test taking strategies, time management, and alumni internships. As new members get started on their majors, older Greek members will always be there for tutoring and guidance.

Leadership Development...
Fraternities and sororities provide leadership opportunities aimed at developing new skills, increasing self-confidence, and enhancing the educational experience. Within the fraternities and sororities, members are given opportunities to hold leadership positions as officers and committee chairs. The Greek community has more than 150 leadership positions. Members are also encouraged to accept leadership positions in other organizations throughout the campus. In fact, many leadership positions on campus are held by Greeks.

Friendship...
Fraternities and sororities enable men and women to establish strong friendships often lasting beyond the collegiate years. Affiliation provides students with an opportunity to interact with members of all ages. Membership also offers students an additional support network during their acclimation to college life.

Risk Management...
Greeks at USD recognize a responsibility to educate chapter members on issues of social concern. Alcohol and drug awareness, date rape, campus violence, HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases are just some of the timely issues being addressed through educational seminars and workshops.

Volunteerism...
Service to the community is another important aspect of Greek involvement at USD. Greeks donate time and energy by organizing, sponsoring, and participating in events that benefit both local and national charities including: the Children's Miracle Network Muscular Dystrophy, Special Olympics, and the American Heart and Lung Association.

Social Life...
Greek organizations offer many opportunities to meet new people and relieve stress through social events. Sororities and fraternities get together for mixers, have date parties, formals, and other casual events. Sororities and fraternities provide a supportive group of sisters and brothers who become lifelong friends.

Physical Development...
Intramural sports activities provide friendly competition among Greek and other USD students. There are a wide variety of sports to choose from such as flag football, water basketball, volleyball, and softball. Participating in intramural activities also teaches the importance of working collaboratively on a team.

Community Service...
Service to the community reflects the true essence of the Greek community. Thus, fraternities and sororities encourage dedication and commitment to others through service activities. Members of our chapters donate many hours to tutoring, visiting nursing homes, participating in community clean-ups, serving as Big Pals to Little Pals, working in the classrooms of local elementary schools, and more! These are just a few of the many volunteer opportunities available to you. Through fund-raisers, Greek students help those in need, meet new people, make new friends, and have fun together!
