What is Early Head Start? Early Head Start is an inclusive, high quality child development program, which is family centered and community based with services designed for expectant families, infants, and toddlers. Early Head Start is a federally funded program, which is free to income eligible families. Eligibility criteria includes family income, infant/toddler age (birth-3 years), at risk pregnancies, and/or a child's special needs. Why is Early Head Start Important? The first three years of life are the most crucial years for the overall development of a child. Infants and toddlers (birth to 3) require a variety of learning experiences in a stable and loving environment in order to thrive in the years ahead. Furthermore, appropriate care during the prenatal period also plays a critical role in a child's future development.
Mission The mission of the USD Early Head Start Program is to collaborate with parents, staff, and community members in order to provide a high quality, comprehensive program. Early Head Start is designed to promote healthy prenatal outcomes and to enhance infant/toddler development. Program History The University of South Dakota Head Start program received notification of the acceptance of the Early Head Start Grant in the Fall of 2001. The Early Head Start program completed a shortened start-up year from October 2001-March 2002. The Early Head Start program initiated services April 1, 2002. The Early Head Start program currently serves 55 expectant families and infants & toddlers through the home base program option.
