Family and Community Partnerships

Family Involvement

Parent involvement is an essential part of the Early Head Start program.  Parents can choose to be involved in many ways, such as parent groups, trainings, volunteering, and governing committees.  Staff support families in their roles by providing information and referral services to the appropriate community partner.

The USD Early Head Start Family Services Staff empower families to develop goals for themselves.  Family Partnership Agreements are completed to help each family identify goals, steps needed to meet the goals, resources available, individual responsibilities, and a timetable for meeting the goals.

Parent Education and Training

Opportunities to develop and promote relationships with parents are provided through many activities, such as parent meetings, training opportunities, parent-activity events, volunteering, and opportunities for involvement on Policy Council and other committees.  Possible topics for education/training include:  parenting, literacy, fatherhood, healthy marriage, CPR, injury prevention, wellness/rest/exercise, community health services, and other topics of interest to the families.

Lending Libraries

The Early Head Start program has a Parent Lending Library, a Book Lending Library, and a Toy Lending Library.  The Parent Lending Library has resources for parents in a variety of topic areas.  The Book Lending Library allows families to access a variety of books and activities.  The Toy Lending Library allows families to experience new and different toys.  All items in the Lending Libraries are available to be checked out and used in the home.

Community Partnerships & Collaborations

USD Early Head Start has extraordinary social and community involvement linking the program to many community agencies.  The wide variety of programs and services provided by the University of South Dakota have an incredible impact on our program.  The generosity of the USD staff and students has given our program many opportunities to extend services to our program staff and Early Head Start families.

Volunteers

Volunteers are an integral part of our program.  We encourage family members to volunteer as well as community members.  If you are interested in volunteering with Early Head Start please contact the program for further information.  Join us in our mission to enhance infant/toddler development.
