Family Involvement Parent involvement is an essential part of the Head Start program. The program encourages all parents/guardians to become involved in parent groups, parent/child activities, volunteering and governing committees. Head Start assists families through referrals or program support to build on each family's strengths and to fulfill their identified needs. Parent Education and Training Opportunities to develop and promote relationships with parents are provided through parent meetings, parent training opportunities, parent-activity events, volunteering, and opportunities for involvement on Policy Council and other committees. Some of the topics include: parenting, literacy, fatherhood, CPR, injury prevention, wellness/rest/exercise, community health services, and other topics of interest to families.
Lending Libraries The Head Start program has a Parent Lending Library and a Child Lending Library. The Parent Lending library has resources for parents in a variety of topic areas. The Child Lending Library allows for families to access a variety of books and activities. Community Partnerships & Collaborations USD Head Start has extraordinary community involvement linking the program to many community agencies. The University of South Dakota programs have an incredible impact on our program. The generosity of the USD staff and students has given our program many opportunities to extend services to our program staff and Head Start families.
Volunteers Volunteers are an integral part of our program. We encourage family members to volunteer as well as community members. If you are interested in volunteering with Head Start please contact the program for further information. The experience will be rewarding.
