Leon Leader Charge 2013
Studying at the University of South Dakota in the Addiction Studies Department has been a dream accomplished.

The ADS Dept. has been very helpful in guiding me down the right path. I have had wonderful professors that have pushed me to gain my full potential as a student. Studying at the ADS Department has been an extraordinary higher educational experience. This program is a leader amongst the country. Being a student at the ADS Department has allowed me to be in the national competition pool.  I have been able to intern at the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) headquarters, Rockville MD.  My hard work as a student and intern had given me the opportunity to become intern of the summer 2013 at the Washington Internship for Native Students, while interning at the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) (SAMSHA).

I have gained grounding in proper theories based on empirical research and models concerning treatment and prevention from the ADS Department.

The ADS Department has not only taught me the necessary counseling skills to be successful in the helping field, but it has instilled me with values and life skills that I will use throughout my professional and personal life.

The ADS program led me to finding out what I wanted to do as a career for the rest of my life.  After the first class I took, ADS 116, I knew this was something I wanted to pursue. The professors are very open and helped me to find my way in the field.  I am grateful for the hands-on experience I obtained through the lab classes, my job shadow, and internship. The program is full of open-minded, non-judgmental staff that helps you to cultivate counseling skills that will best suit you in a professional environment. The amazing education I received in the ADS program lead me to my job today as an adolescent chemical dependency counselor and well prepared me for the aspects of the job.

The Master's program in Addiction Studies has greatly helped me broaden my knowledge base in the field and fine tune my counseling skills even more. It is such a convenient program since it is all online and the Master's degree will facilitate my career goals and success in the field.
