National History Day will be held June 12 - 19, 2008.
National History Day
South Dakota History Day is part of the National History Day contest. National History Day was founded in 1974 at Case Western Reserve University to promote the study of history by middle school and high school students. South Dakota has participated since 1981.
Each fall, students and teachers begin preparing entries based on the annual theme. The theme for 2008 is Conflict and Compromise in History. Students may compete as individuals or groups up to five, at the junior or senior level, in four categories: paper, exhibit, performance or documentaries.
District contests are held in late March and early April. District winners are eligible to compete at the 2008 state contest held at The University of South Dakota. State winners may go on the national contest, held at the University of Maryland - College Park, in June 2008.
Each year, an estimated seven hundred South Dakota students participate in the contest. A group of forty to fifty state winners will make the trip, along with parents, teachers, and chaperones, to the national contest. They are among approximately two thousand contestants from all over the United States.
Students usually combine competition with sightseeing. The metro train system links the University of Maryland to Washington, D.C. Favorite sights include the Air and Space Museum, the American History Museum, the shops of the Old Post Office, the Washington Monument, the Vietnam Memorial, and Pentagon City Mall. Each South Dakota delegation has its picture taken with South Dakota's congressional representatives.
