The Evolution of Womens Rights.
- 1519-Catherine de Medici is born; she will be the
"brains behind the throne" in France for the next thirty years.
- 1544-Elizabeth I becomes Queen of
England, she rules without a husband.
- 1776- Abigail Adams writes a letter asking her
husband, John to "Remember the Ladies".
- 1791-Bill of rights is drafted, no mention is made of women.
- 1789-The French national assembly drafts the rights of man no mention is made of women.
- 1792-Mary Wollstonecraft publishes The
Vindication of the Rights of Women.
- 1860-Women's suffrage movement begins in England.
- 1857-The society for the promoting and employment of women founded.
- 1867-General German Workers Congress passed resolution
about employment of women.
- 1869-SPD tries to eliminate cheap female labor.
- 1890-The word feminist is coined to refer to womens rights activists.
- 1891-German Social Democratic Party officially endorsed and supported the emancipation
of women.
- 1892-Clara Zetkin becomes editor of Die
Gleichheit.
- 1910-Herbert Asquith halts suffrage legislation. This
ushers in a more radical turn to the feminist movement.
- 1917-Russian communist regime preaches total equality between men and women.
- 1918-Asquith is worn down and finally agrees to support a womens suffrage bill.
- 1920s-New strategy in women's movement in Germany, reform not revolution.
- 1926-Women still cannot vote in France, Italy, Belgium or Switzerland.
- 1933-Women's rights movement destroyed in Germany by fascism.
- 1940-Women fight alongside men in the Russian army as
snipers and bomber pilots.
- 1942-Because many men are away fighting the war, many women
enter the work force.
- 1949-Simone de Beauvoirs book The
Second Sex is published.
- 1950s-The Eisenhower era ideal family is en vogue, womens role in society becomes
more domestic.
- 1960s-The growth of the womens place in the work force causes the feminist
movement to experience a renaissance of sorts.
- 1966-Indira Gahndi serves as Prime Minister of
India.
- 1979-Margaret Thatcher begins her run as
Britain's longest standing Prime Minister.
- 1980s-Feminism is now divided into two camps: those who believe that women and men are
equal in all senses and those who believe that women and men each have their own place in
society.
- 1990s-Women can contribute in many areas that they were not able to before but still
continue to fight for the same opportunities that are available to men, economic as well
as political equality.
