Glossary of Hippie Expressions

Bag: a personal area of involvement or interest, as in "that’s his bag"

Behind-it: sincerely committed to a particular subject of action

Bread: money

Bug: bother, annoy

Bummer: an emotionally unpleasant or upsetting experience; also, a negative drug reaction as an "LSD bummer"

Burned: cheated

Busted: arrested

Clark Kent hippies: part-timers who live mainly in straight society; week-end hippies

Cop-out: to confess, or to compromise one’s position or beliefs

Cool: to be tuned-in, into things

Cut out: leave

Dig: enjoy, appreciate, understated

Far out: unusual, extraordinary; bizarre or avant-garde

Flash-on: to think about; become intensely aware of or remember

Freak-out: to lose control, to have bizarre patterns of though or behavior. Often occurring under the influence of a                      drug

Grass: marijuana

Groove: to "swing," to enjoy, to be "with it"

Hassle: an annoyance or a conflict situation

Head: a frequent user of psychedelic drugs, as in acid-head or pot-head

Heat: police

Hip: to be "in," "with it," emotionally wise, in the know

Joint: marijuana cigarette

Man (the): police; or drug dealer

Out front: open; honest; or the preface to a statement

Out of sight: so good that words fail to describe it

Rap: to talk; or present one’s particular point or view

Roach: butt of a marijuana cigarette

Spade: a Negro. Used in a non-discriminatory way

Split: to leave

Square: a person or thing, not tuned-in or in the know

Stoned: very high on drugs

Teenybopper: a teenage "plastic" hippie

Turn-on: to use a drug; to get into the new scene

Up-tight: overly anxious or nervous
