Freedom of Speech

One of our most basic rights in the United States is the freedom of speech. Freedom of speech has roots in ancient times and far away places. It has not always been recognized or utilized; nor is it always in current times. In the modern world people in free countries often take their rights and freedoms for granted. In fact they rarely, if ever, consider what rights and freedoms they have. The media expresses various criticisms of the president, companies, or the legal system. Often these opinions are supported by facts and experts in the various fields. Countries such as the United States and England enjoy such freedoms in their everyday life. One of the most important and often the most denied right that free people enjoy is the right to freedom of speech. Many countries around the world do not enjoy this right. Many countries support democracy and the peoples' right to free speech, but in reality the citizens of countries such as these countries live in fear when they exercise the rights the state says that they have as a citizen.

This website will identify four occasions in history in which freedom of speech was excerised by citizens of countries who professed to uphold freedom of speech. The consequences of these cases vary and are contrary to the laws of the country.
