| Islamic Scientists | One example of historically inaccurate information surfaces when discussing the origin of glass mirrors. The traditional idea is that mirrors were first used in Venice in 1291. This merchant city was an important stop along the ancient trade routes. It stands to reason that it would have been quick to change with the times in order to cater to its myriad clientele. This aspect of the city creates a problem when dating any changes in technology; however, the first mirrors are attributed to Islamic Spain in the eleventh century. Confusion is introduced when considering the fine craftsmanship Venetian artisans displayed in blowing and shaping glass. This art form was adopted from the Syrians as early as the ninth century. The reflective nature of mirrors is something that Islamic craftsmen discovered through years of refinement. | Contact the Authors at: |
