"How did your uneducated kind ever take Jerusalem?" Morgan Freeman asked Kevin Costner in a popular remake of Robin Hood.
The truth is that the crusades were nothing more than an act of vanity. Though the idea of forcing one's religion on others
in order to save them from the fires of hell is common, it is in fact quite the opposite when technology and innovation are
concerned in regards to the crusades. The Islamic people developed many useful, common instruments and ideas that they
became dependent on for carying out normal daily life. When the Northern Europeans bombarded the Holy Land in hopes of
reclaiming it and saving the savages, they took with them a fair amount of the technology that the Arabic people had honed
over years of prosperity.
Presumably the best known of the centuries of borrowing ideas from the Islamic people, the crusades stand out as a pivotal point in the desecration of Islamic culture. This time period marks the largest campaign of inovative theft; however, it in no way eliminates the probability of countless other misconceptions regarding the genius of Islamic thinkers and scientists. Countless tomes and scrolls exist today that have not been read for centuries. The inventions known and attributed to Islamic scientists and thinkers represent a mere fraction of the truth behind technology's history. Some 200,000 documents are known to be of this nature, written to preserve the historical integrity of scientific advancement. The reality of this situation is that so many great men and women of the Islamic tradition go unnoticed because of a lack of interest in the truth behind innovation. |
