The Love of Dido and Aeneas

Juno, Neptune, and Aeolus interfered and Aeneas and his crew were delivered to Dido's city of Carthage. She welcomed them warmly and treated them very well. Venus sent Cupid to make Dido fall in love with Aeneas, and she did. Venus and Juno encouraged a union between the two by forcing them together in a storm. The new lovers developed a very open, loving relationship as if they were married.

But Jupiter found out that Aeneas wasn't fulfilling his duty to found a great new nation. he sent Mercury to remind Aeneas of this, and Aeneas prepared to leave. He didn't know how to tell Dido that even though he loved her intensely he had to leave, so he ignored the issue. He made his preparations without telling her anything. She found out and was extremely angry and hurt by his deception. She confronted him very emotionally and he coldly told her he was leaving. He reminded her that he was not legally bound to stay with her. He had to do what he had to do.

Dido was very upset and pleaded with Aeneas to remain in Carthage. She threatened to commit suicide if he left. Aeneas and his crew left Carthage in the middle of the night without telling Dido anything. In the morning, she found out and declared that their people would forever be at war. She stabbed herself with a sword that had been given to her by Aeneas. The smoke from the funeral pyre caught Aeneas' eye. He realized what must have happened but continued on his journey.

When Aeneas was visiting his father in Hades, he saw Dido and implored her to forgive him. She ignored him and ran away, leaving Aeneas to live with his guilt for the rest of his life.
