Rubens' Samson and Delilah

This painting of the biblical tale of Samson and Delilah shows how the religious focus of this time period was concentrated on religious ecstasy and sensuality rather than God himself. This particular biblical analogy of broken trust was especially popular during this time of war and political instability. With the period of scientific thought and revolution, artists tended to stray from religious subjects with the exception of tapestries for cathedrals and pictures that depicted useful ideas, such as those presented in Samson and Delilah.
