Rembrandt's David Presenting the Head of Goliath to Saul

In a time of political upheavals and civil wars, the emphasis of art in the Baroque Period tended to shift away from religion. The religious art that did appear, however, was created specifically for the decor of cathedrals or to convey biblical analogies. This painting of David Presenting the Head of Goliath to Saul was perhaps created as a political statement of inferior power, or people rising up in the seventeenth century. Through this religious analogy, Rembrandt not only created a lasting work of art, but at the same time portrayed a powerful political message.

This image comes from Bredins, Rembrandt, 399.
