Michelangelo's The Holy Family
Michelangelo was a unique artist in that the depth of his Christianity did not let his preoccupation with the classical beauty of the human body lead him away from the religious and spiritual content, as happended to other artists of the Renaissance. He chose to show the torture of the soul through muscular distortions in the body, as is shown in this painting. He believed that all suffering could be calmed through religion. This was not a typical painting from the Renaissance, but rather one that rebelled from the standard of the time.
