This painting, from the Sistine Chapel, shows Christ giving Peter the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. All Popes received their authority because they claimed to be direct descendants of Peter. They used this ancestry to justify their right to lead the Church, and as their right and duty to lead all people (even in the secular world).
