Florence: Birthplace of the Renaissance ca 1350

The Northern Italian city-states, such as Florence, never accepted the concept of feudalism. As a result, Florence grew and flourished unlike the Northern European cities that embraced feudalism. In addition, Florence's contact with Muslim and Byzantine ideas led to the rejuvenation of classical culture.

The Renaissance encompassed a wide variety of economic, political, religious, and artistic changes in the realm of Western Civilization. This time period was a revitalization of Greek and Roman culture and evoked a new sense of classicism within Western European society.
