The Underground Railroad (link to summary of the Underground Railroad) was an underground revolution because people had to do things in secret. The Underground Railroad was so named because of the terminology they used while running it. The Underground Railroad was a network system of safe houses (stations) that gave food, shelter, and directions to African slaves that were running from their masters. The freed Blacks or White abolitionists that gave aid to the runaways were called "conductors". The Underground Railroad (link to summary by World Book) was run mainly by runaway slaves, but the "President" of the Underground Railroad was a Quaker.
