The advances in technology have introduced many changes to western culture. In addition to the phenomenal transformation in western medicine, business, and daily tasks, technology has done much to change the way that students learn and teachers teach. For centuries it has been the goal of the educator to remain current in his or her skills and to provide up-to-date information for the scholar. Each generation of educators has been faced with the challenge of keeping up with a tidal wave of new technology. Today's educators are faced with changes in telecommunications, computers, and information technologies that are emerging faster than they can be mastered. Classrooms are filled with words like "multimedia," "CD-ROM," "distance learning," "World Wide Web," "on-line information," and "electronic mail." These advancements have improved the quality of many aspects of the classroom environment, but what do we lose in exchange for these benefits? While we are celebrating the excitement of this technology, we must also consider the problem areas so that they can be corrected.
