Floods of Kindness

Few experiences in life challenge the strength of the human spirit more than watching while one's home, possessions, and memories are swallowed up in one giant murky gulp of nature. Nevertheless, time and time again, the human spirit has endured the horrors of flooding. Not only has humanity survived--it has triumphed as people of every walk of life rise to the challenge and reach out to help those in need.

The outpouring of relief efforts outweighs the devastation and loss that a flood unleashes (courtesy of FEMA; Andrea Booher, photographer).

Below are links to three floods, which could have washed away the warmth of their respective communities' kindred spirits. Each is from a different era, but in every case the showering of aid from various sources proves that the altruistic assistance--in the face of disaster--is indeed timeless.

Missouri River Flood of 1881

Mississippi River Flood of 1927

Red River Flood of 1997
