The general sense of community has changed drastically over the course of
history. A mere 5000 years ago one's concept of community was the small group of
people with which one hunted or lived. Over the next 4500 years that concept
did not undergo much change. Most individuals interacted with only those people
who lived within a short distance from their home. But the last 500 years have
seen monumental changes in people's perspectives. From the postal system to
radio to television, individuals have been acquiring the ability to meet a wide
range of people and experience a large number of unique places and events. This
newly acquired ability has drastically changed the perspective of citizens in
todays society. No longer is community the small village in which you reside,
but it is the state and nation in which you live, and increasingly in today's
environment, your community is the world as a whole.
This last great leap in the development of community has been facilitated by a
new form of communication. The development of the Internet, and more
specifically the World Wide Web, has allowed far greater interaction between
members of society. It has only been in the last 5 years, since the beginnings
of the World Wide Web (WWW), that the sense of global community has developed.
This can be attributed to the fact that communication on the WWW is
instantaneous and relatively inexpensive. The WWW has lead to the development of
an overwhelming sense of global community. No longer is community bound by the
traditional guidelines of geography or politics, but community is truly free.
