Listed below are the geographic features, sites, and schools in South Dakota and Nebraska that contain the 'S' word. Further searches can be made by referring to the United States Geological Survey database website provided below the reproduced sites. I have also included references to newspaper articles that relate to the problem. At some point in the near future I hope to have these articles available for reading on this site and append new articles as they become available.
As responsible citizens and parents, it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to teach our children, and others with whom we have contact, respect for each other. When we do this we also show respect for ourselves. The continued use of this word is not only offensive but it imparts disrespect for American Indian women, and by extension, all women. Each community in which the sites are found should be responsible to take appropriate action. Authors of the reproduced articles provided hereon offer plans of action that will lead to a successful change.
I also apologize for reproducing the 'S' word as provided by the U. S. Geological Survey data. It is offensive to see it printed so many times; perhaps that can be a lesson in itself.
