History of Oscar Howe-Designed Logo

Oscar Howe
designed logo

A geometric design by noted Yanktonai artist, Oscar Howe, the circle represents the Sioux circle for Unity, the buffalo symbol is for Life, and the two crossed pipes are for Understanding. The bird image encompasses the characterisitics of several species and their symbolism: the dove for peasce; the eagle for authority and prayer; the thunderbird for power; and the great owl for wisdom. The design as a whole is that of double vision--of going and coming views.

Adapted from notes made by Oscar Howe and inscribed on the back of the original artwork. The design is the signature image for the American Indian Studies program at the University of South Dakota. The original work is a part of the University Art Galleries permanent collection.
