The Fort Peck Tribes are organized and governed under a Tribal
Constitution and By-Laws approved by the Secretary of Interior on
October 1, 1960. This constitution establishes the governing body and
its authority to administer overall tribal business, including economic
development, of the reservation.

The Tribal Executive Board, comprised of fifteen enrolled members of
the Fort Peck Tribes, is the governing body of the reservation. The Tribal
Executive Board is comprised of a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Sergeant-at-Arms,
and twelve voting members. At the discretion of the Tribal Executive Board,
a Secretary-Accountant is appointed either from within its membership or
from among the Tribal membership.

As a decision of the Tribal Executive Board, seven business committees
have been established. The committee structure is organized into areas of
business that are of specific concern to the reservation. Each committee is
comprised of six of the twelve voting council members, with the exception
of the Resolutions Committee, on which all twelve council members sit. A
committee chairman and secretary are selected from within the committee
membership.

Each committee deals with broad areas of tribal business that are
within the area of concern of that committee. The committee level is the
first contact point for setting of tribal policy and business management.
Direction for tribal programs, requests from tribal membership, tribal
business, or business from outside the tribal structure is reviewed and
analyzed first at the committee level. The committee hears and considers
tribal business, makes recommendations through voting, and refers committee
action to the Tribal Executive Board for formal action.
