  • Reserve Collection
    • Reserve Room
    • In-library use.
      • Hornbooks, some Restatements of the Law, Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, faculty reserve books, the South Dakota Codified Laws, BNA Criminal Law Reporter, U.S. Law Week and Federal Case News.
      • Special collection on Indian law, legal ethics, legal research, writing and careers, as well as law school tests and admission information.
      • United States Eight Circuit Court slip opinions, SD Supreme Court slip opinions, a few SD law titles and the Administrative Rules of South Dakota are considered reserve items. The State Bar of SD Newsletter, SD Register and ABA file round out the reserve collection. 
  • Microform Collection
    • Microfilm and microfiche titles are filed in media cabinets adjacent to the Circulation Desk.
    • These may be viewed on the reader/printers in that location.
    • Circulation staff will assist patrons needing microforms during regular business hours.
      • Paper copies of microforms are available for $ .50 per copy.
      • Guides for locating microforms by titles are located on top of the cabinets.
      • Materials currently maintained on microform media include:

        • Biolaw...Microfiche Supplement
        • Complete Martindale-Hubbell: South Dakota
        • Federal Register Microfiche
        • Hein's Bar Journals on Microfiche

        • United States Supreme Court Records & Briefs
        • Other titles are available on microform as well. These are listed in the Law Library's online catalog. 
  • Reference Collection, Federal & State Codes
    • The Main Level of the Law Library may be considered the reference collection. LC Classified reference titles, directories, dictionaries, and research guides are on the low metal shelving beside the reference desk. The Index to Legal Periodicals and Current Law Index reside on wooden shelving to the left of the public access computer area. Shepard's Citations are on the low wooden shelving by the entrance.
    • The United States Code, USCA, federal, state and regional reporters, digests, supplements, restatements of the law and legal encyclopedias are all located on ranges 3-14. The classified loose-leaf titles, forms and procedures books are located on ranges 14-17. State codes are shelved on ranges 18 and 19, with the exception of the South Dakota Codified Laws, which are in the Reserve Room.
    • The South Dakota collection and Faculty and Staff Writing collections are on range 20.  The remaining shelves on the main level house bound periodicals (ranges 21-40). Legal Briefs are maintained in locked file cabinets on the south wall near the entrance.    
  • Newspapers & Magazines
    • Subscriptions include Rapid City Journal, Sioux Falls Argus Leader, Vermillion Plain Talk, The National Law Journal, Wall Street Journal and New York Times. In addition, Sports Illustrated, South Dakota Conservation Digest and Newsweek are available in the Student Lounge. Magazine back issues are kept for a brief period. Consumer Reports magazine is kept in the Periodicals Room.  


  • Circulating Collection (Library of Congress Classified or LC Collection)
    • The lower level of the Law Library contains the LC Collection of circulating titles.  These are located on ranges 19-40. All titles may circulate for a four week period.
  • Foreign Law & Government Documents
    • English law materials are located on the lower level ranges 1-4.
    • Canadian law titles are also on range 4.
    • Duplicate state and regional reports are located on ranges 5-13.
    • The bound Federal Register, administrative agency reports and other Government Documents reside on ranges 14-18.
    • These may be used within the Law Library.  Please place all books used on book carts for re-shelving.
  • Audiovisual Collection
    • Audio and video programs are available for circulation or in-library viewing. 
      • This collection requires library assistance for access.
    • The State Bar of South Dakota also owns a collection on continuing legal education topics.
      • Requests, please call (605) 677-5363. 


  • Faculty Library, Williamson and Historical Research Collection
    • The Faculty Library is located on the upper level of the Law Library. In addition, the upper level houses the Williamson Collection, Historical Research Collection and backup volumes for the Main Level collections . Finally, the bound periodicals, closed sets and older volumes, are shelved upstairs. These are also intended for in-library usage.
