The University of South Dakota School of Law welcomes the Supreme Court of South Dakota each Spring for the court's March term. Three oral arguments are scheduled each morning in the Law School courtroom. A total of nine oral arguments are scheduled over the three days. The remainder of each day, the court is scheduled to consider non-oral arguments (written appellate briefs). |

SD Supreme Court Justices
All members of the South Dakota Supreme Court are graduates of USD School of Law. Court members and the year each graduated are: Chief Justice David Gilbertson ('75), and Justices John Konenkamp ('74), Steven Zinter ('75), Justice Glen Severson ('75). and Justice Lori S. Wilbur ('77).
The USD School of Law, now in its 110th year of educating lawyer-leaders, extends its thanks and appreciation to the members of the South Dakota Supreme Court for these annual March visits. We are honored to welcome 'home' these five, who are among the many alumni leaders of the USD School of Law.
Important Supreme Court Information Regarding Security and Case Schedule
The following list of Dos and Don'ts was prepared for the benefit of anyone attending one of the Court's sessions. Your cooperation in observing the proper Courtroom protocol will insure that the lawyers presenting argument before the Court will not be unduly distracted and that the proper respect for the Judiciary will be maintained. Your cooperation is appreciated.
DO
- Remove caps/hats before entering the Courtroom
- Enter the Courtroom prior to the commencement of an argument
- Stand when the Justices enter and leave the Courtroom
- Listen attentively
- Turn off phones before entering courtroom
DO NOT
- Bring food or drinks into the courtroom
- Enter or leave the Courtroom during the course of an argument
- Create any distraction
- Engage in any conversation once an argument begins
The South Dakota Supreme Court employs security methods to insure the well-being of all who attend its proceedings. All attendees will be requested to pass through a metal detector. The Court requests attendees leave backpacks and other such items in their vehicles and school buses. When the Court visits USD School of Law each spring, backpacks and book bags are NOT allowed during the sessions. All bags, such as purses, are subject to inspection by security personnel.
The Court will provide booklets containing a schedule of the cases to be heard and a short synopsis of each case, as well as biographical information on the justices and a short summary of appellate procedure for visitors attending the Court's sessions.
