Library Access to the Campus Backbone for
Wireless/Laptop Users
In order to connect your laptop computer to the campus
backbone from any of the data drops in the Lommen Health
Sciences Library, or use Palms, PocketPCs, or any
other wireless-enable device in
wireless LAN areas in the
library, you will have to make sure you have taken care of the
following:
- Have a network interface card (NIC)
in your wireless-enabled device or laptop which will support 10BaseT and a
patch cable
to connect your laptop to the data drop (this cable should have
connectivity to your laptops network interface card on one end and
an RJ45 connector (looks like a big phone jack) on the other);
-
and register your
computer address (Mac Address) with Information Technology Services-- either
by going to www.usd.edu/dhcp (with
your laptop or wireless-enabled device at hand) or by visiting the Help
Desk in room 16, Slagle Hall, 677-5028.
The Library has 24 study carrels and all
3 study rooms wired for patron use.
Printing for laptop users is not
available; users may use one of the campus computer labs for such.
If you have questions about
network interface cards, patch cables, or other locations on campus from
which you can connect to the backbone with your laptop or wireless-enabled
device, please contact the Information Technology Services Help Desk,
room 16 Slagle Hall, 677-5028. Also, see their website;
"Connecting
to the Campus Network".
This service is being offered to
USD students, staff, and faculty, and as such is subject to all the
protocols in place with regard to the use of the Universitys computing
resources.
If you have questions concerning
library connectivity, please contact Heidi Nickisch Duggan, 677-5121, Lommen
Health Sciences Library 107A, or email nickisch@usd.edu.
