    Online Resources for Alternative Medicine
    Room 323

    This class will provide an overview of some of the library's databases and Internet resources available to help you locate information on alternative and complementary medicine and therapies.

     

    Document Delivery Services
    Rm 323

    Document delivery options and procedures will be explained. Attendees will learn how to use UnCover and UnCover Reveal, a table of contents delivery service.

     

    PALS Library Catalog
    Room 323

    Learn how to use the library catalog for locating books, journals, videos, maps, and more with the search commands you'll learn in this session. We'll also show you how to access PALS from your home, office, or dorm room.

     

    LEXIS-NEXIS' Academic and Statistical Universe Databases
    Room 323

    Academic Universe consists of a huge library of newspaper, trade and other magazine publications. Finding EXACTLY what you want can be a daunting experience. We'll work to overcome that. Statistical Universe is an interesting database consisting of federal and state as well trade association, think tank items. We'll work on making government research enhance your research.

     

    Ebscohost Databases
    Room 323

    Ebscohost provides the library with 9 databases. The library began subscribing to this system instead of the ProQuest system because a study by one of the librarians showed that the Ebsco system provided a greater number scholarly journals online. This session will provide you with hands-on training in the use of this interface.

     

    Online Resources for Theatre and Film Studies
    Room 323

    Here, you will find you some great websites and subscripton databases to help you locate reviews of films and plays, article and book citations, and full-text articles. We'll focus on search strategies.

     

    Online Resources for Modern Languages
    Room 323

    Parlez-vous Internet? Explore some online resources for Modern Languages and Literature. We'll look at multi-purpose resources, specific language pages, and we'll talk about the best methods to search for language related resources.

     

    Online Resources for Political Science
    Room 323

    Bring current research topics or topics that you've utilized in previous semesters in political science/government classes. We'll use those topics to explore a number of databases such as EBSCO, Social Science Abstracts, Lexis-Nexis and a number of other data- bases.

     

    Research Resources for Graduate Students: Dissertation and Worldcat Databases
    Room 323

    If you're preparing to write a thesis or dissertation proposal, you'll want to include information outside the I.D. Weeks Library. This hands-on session will demonstrate two indispensable databases for those at the graduate level. You'll also learn how to locate online catalogs and passwords for major universities, so that you can check their collections for relevant materials on your subject.

     

    Online Resources for English and American Literature
    Room 323

    This session will focus on the myriad of online resources available to those studying English and American Literature. The hands-on portion will help you create effective search strategies when using subscription databases, as well as Search Engines like Altavista and InfoSeek.

     

    Searching Citation Databases (Science and Social Sciences)

    These are arguably your best databases when needing empirical research. Its power is in enabling you to find out who is citing whom, which can generate material you had no idea existed! Bring your research needs or past research to this session. That way, what you learn will have more meaning to you!

     

    Medical and Science Information Resources

    Get an overview of some of the subscription databases available in Science and Medicine, to include BioethicsLine, Biosis, MEDLINE, MICROMEDEX, and more!

     

    Online Resources for Education
    Room 323

    This session will focus on how to search Education Databases and is geared to undergraduate and graduate students. There will be a hands-on demonstration on how to find the right descriptors (aka subject headings, controlled vocabulary) and how to search the various versions of ERIC and the Education Abstracts database.

     

    Online Resources for Business
    Room 205

    We'll work with a wide variety of databases for articles as well as a company-performance database called COMPUSTAT. By all means, bring whatever company and industry-oriented research you're engaged in to this class.

     

    Lewis and Clark Materials in the Chilson Collection
    Room 205

    As we approach the anniversary years of the Lewis and Clark expedition, there is an increasing interest in related historical materials. We'll discuss searching for the holdings in the Library's Chilson Collection, and will preview some of the holdings available in the USD Special Collections.

    Find out a bit about evidence-based medicine and learn to use the primary evidence-based medicine resources: the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and the ACP Best Evidence database.

     

    Conducting Research in the USD Archives and Special Collections

    What exactly IS available, tucked back in the Archives and Special Collections on the 3rd floor? And how do I go about finding it when I need it? Discover what is held in the University's large Archives and Special Collections, and how to begin to conduct archival research at USD.

     

    Searching the WWW

    This session will explain how search engine databases are created; how your search results are affected because of what's happening behind the scenes; how to develop effective search strategies; and how to choose the best search engine to fill your information need.

     

    Evaluating Web Sites
    Room 323

    Check out the historical information presented in this web site:
    www.martinlutherking.org? Is all of the historical information accurate? Would you cite the information in a research paper? If so, then come to this session and we'll point out some inaccuracies. Learn to evaluate web sites by understanding how to determine such things as authority, credibility, staying power, and nonbiased language.

     

    Online Resources for History

    This session will include a hands-on demonstration of two databases: America:History and Life and Historical Abstracts. The instructor will also point out some good history web sites.
