This soft cover coffee table book, which accompanies the traveling exhibition USD Photograph Collection: Preserving Our Past in Images, 1930 - 1999, is the first publication offering a photographic look into the history of the University of South Dakota and features images from the USD Photograph Collection held within the USD Archives and Special Collections.

With an introduction by University Distinguished Professor Emeritus Wayne S. Knutson, Ph.D. and guest commentary contributed by Nancy Hoy McCahren, Alumni Association, and John Banasiak, professor of photography, this volume presents fifty black and white photographs selected from over 300,000 possible images of our past.

A look at the history and the future of the USD Photograph Collection as well as a list of photographers working on or for the campus between 1930 and 1999 rounds out this 78 page volume.

Women's Rifle Team, Vermillion Depot, Students of Medicine, University Park, Home Economics, USD vs. Northern Colorado, The Coop, USD Theatre, KUSD Studio, Cypress Court, USA vs. Cuba in Havana, Grand Old Silver Maple, and the Annual Student Wacipi are some of the photographs included.

Fred Borsch and Tootsie, Dean Belbas, Jimmie and Clifton Daniels, Barber Fay Swisher, Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, Cedric Cummins, Grete BodØgaard, Oscar Howe, N. Scott Momaday, Robert "Bobby" Penn, Ruth and General Lloyd R. Moses have also found their way into this visual history of USD. 


Limited Edition Portfolios

Two portfolios of this exhibition, consisting of all fifty exhibition prints, have been prepared and are offered for sale. All photographs are selenium toned gelatin silver prints, placed in archival sleeves and archival portfolio boxes. Photographs are presented without framing or matting. A catalogue of exhibition is included.
