The USD Archives and Special Collections is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM, and by appointment. Closed on state holidays.

The University of South Dakota Archives and Special Collections is the rare books, manuscripts and archives department of the USD Libraries. It contains multiple research collections.

  • The Chilson Collection includes materials relating to local histories, South Dakota history, Native American cultures, and western expansion of the United States.
  • The Mahoney Music Collection is one of the most complete collections in the United States pertaining to the violin and violin family instruments.
  • The Richardson Collection is made up of distinct manuscript collections focusing on South Dakota's cultural, political, and economic history. 
  • The USD Archives holds the records of the academic and administrative departments of USD as well as materials relating to the activities of its students, faculty, and alumni.
  • The USD Photograph Collection comprises the largest and most comprehensive surviving photographic history of USD.
