MD Program. The Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota has earned a reputation as one of the best medical schools in the nation emphasizing family practice. Most recently, U.S. News and World Report listed the School of Medicine as sixth in the country in recognition of its strong achievements in Rural Medicine. These accolades, along with nationally recognized research, demonstrate the high caliber of The School of Medicine.
As a community-based program, the curriculum emphasizes family medicine and primary care with the support and participation by practicing physicians and community hospitals throughout the state. Community hospitals and clinics provide teaching sites and the practicing physicians are teachers.
The first two years of basic science education are delivered in Vermillion. The third year of the program is provided in community settings and hospitals in Sioux Falls, the Rapid City area and Yankton. The fourth year is provided in hospitals and ambulatory clinics across the entire state of South Dakota.

Physician Scientist Program. Sanford School of Medicine is proud to offer our new Physician Scientist Program. Physician scientists play a unique role in contemporary medical research, having received extensive training in both medicine and fundamental research. Physician scientists typically hold a combined MD/PhD degree. Approximately half of the medical schools nationwide offer the MD/PhD degree.
Basic Medical Sciences. The Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences provides a variety of course and program offerings at the undergraduate, professional and graduate levels. In the rapidly changing fields that encompass Basic Biomedical Sciences, we believe that outstanding teaching can best be met by outstanding faculty researchers and educators. The division has a graduate program leading to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in Basic Biomedical Sciences.
Residencies. Five residency programs are offered by The Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota School of Medicine: Internal Medicine, Pathology, Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Transitional.
Two Family Practice residency programs are affiliated with SSOM. One program is located in Rapid City and was developed and implemented to assist the western South Dakota region by training physicians to provide broad-based, high quality, primary care in a rural setting. The Sioux Falls Family Practice Residency was established in May 1973, and has graduated over 200 residents to date. Seventy-five percent of these physicians practice in South Dakota and the contiguous states.

Research:
The Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota receives more than $16 million annually in external funding for its research programs. This continues a steady growth trend of increasing total support over the past 5 years. Increases in investigator-initiated grant awards recognize the individual initiative and excellence of faculty research. In response to the school's mission, graduate students train to become doctoral level biomedical research scientists and medical students participate in summer basic science research projects. Research programs in heart disease, cell biology, multiple sclerosis, antibiotics and rural health health bring national acclaim.
Facilities:
| The Lee Medical Sciences building on The University of South Dakota campus houses basic science education. The new Medical Education Wing, notable for its progressive learning environment, will feature small group rooms for collaborative learning. The Graduate Education and Research Wing will include flexible laboratory modules, which will accommodate changes in research needs overnight or over 50 years. A three-story atrium will provide areas for visiting speakers, receptions, meetings, conferences and symposia. [Read More.] |
