Alumni Student Scholars gathered with alumni, USD and USDSM faculty and
administration at the Buffalo Run Winery in Vermillion November 15, 2001.
The annual autumn social has traditionally been held in Old Main. With more
alumni participating, this years event found a new venue, which was
appreciated by all who attended. The reception was held from 5:00 to 7:00
p.m. for ASSP undergrad and medical students, and hosted by Jerry Yutrzenka,
director of the program.
USD President Jim Abbott saluted Dr. Warren Jones (43 BSMD) as a role model
for students, recognizing that even after retiring from fifty years of
clinical faculty service, Dr. Jones continues to be very interested in
students, the School of Medicine and the University. Dr. Donald Dahlin, USD
Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Susan Hackemer of the USD Honors
Program also addressed the students.
USDSM Alumni Foundation President, Loren Amundson (54 BSMD), gave a report
on students who are selected for ASSP. There have been 210 South Dakota high
school seniors who have applied, and 54 who have matriculated into ASSP
since 1992. The average ACT score of matriculants is 30, and the mean CPA is
3.97. ASSP students represent 33 South Dakota communities, and 70% are
women.
As of this fall, the USDSM Alumni Foundation has given $175,000 in
scholarship support to ASSP. The Alumni Foundation and the School of
Medicine are very grateful to the alumni who are giving back to the school
and making this program possible.
