building for the future
The School of Medicine has been housed in the Andrew E. Lee Memorial Medicine and Science Hall since 1952. Unfortunately, the original mechanical, lighting, electrical and plumbing systems are outdated, outmoded, and/or inadequate to support the growing needs of modern biomedical education and research. The existing Lee Building is no longer functional and severely limits the faculty's teaching and research capabilities.
The expansion and reconstruction of the Lee Medicine Building will provide The University of South Dakota a state-of-the-art life science facility. The new building, totaling 157,000 square feet, will be comprised of two wings. The Graduate Education and Research Wing and the Medical Education Wing will be joined by a striking three-story atrium. The entire building will be wired for the latest technology and designed to be easily adaptable as the technology changes. Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota will be better able to host visiting speakers, receptions, meetings, conferences, and symposia. The future will be limitless with this new facility for modern biomedical education and research.
In recognition and appreciation of private gifts for the USD Medical Sciences Building, the University offers a wide variety of naming opportunities in the new facility. All donors will be recognized on a donor recognition wall that will be prominently featured in the building.
