admissions

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants to the MD Program must:

  • Be US citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be a South Dakota resident or non-resident with strong ties to the state.
  • Have earned at least 64 semester credits of college course work to be considered for admission.
  • Take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) within three years of application deadline.
  • Complete the equivalent of two semesters, including laboratory experience in the following areas:  BIOLOGY, GENERAL (INORGANIC) CHEMISTRY, ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND MATHEMATICS.
  • Submit prior to matriculation, transcripts of all college credits earned, indicating at least 90 semester credit hours, or preferable, a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Submit and successfully complete prior to matriculation a Student Background Check.
  • Agree to the terms of Technical Standards for Admission. (If you are having difficulty downloading the form,download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat.)

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Applications are processed through the American Medical College Application Service(AMCAS).  Registration and information about the MCAT is also available at AAMC.

  • File an application with AAMC between June 1, 2007 and November 15, 2007.
  • Take MCATS no later than Fall 2007 and no earlier than Spring 2005.
  • Applicants who are SD residents and non-residents with ties will be offered a supplemental application.  All SD residents will be offered an interview.  Applicants who are non-residents with ties will be reviewed by a Ties Sub-Committee and invitations to interview are at the discretion of this committee.
  • Interviews take place between late September and early February.
  • Letters of acceptance may be mailed anytime between November and March.  Letters for the final group for acceptance, for the alternate list and for non-acceptances are mailed no later than March 31st.
  • Accepted students must secure their position in the class within two weeks by signing a notarized form and depositing $100.00 towards their tuition.
  • An accepted student may withdraw prior to June 1 and receive a refund of their $100.00 deposit.
  • Date of matriculation - August 4th, 2008 with Orientation on July 30th - August 1st 2008.

TRANSFER/ADVANCED STANDING

  • Medical students who have begun their studies at an LCME accredited medical school may apply for admissions to the second or third year classes at USDSM. 
  • Applicants must have completed work comparable to that of students attending USDSM, meet all the admissions criteria, pass Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Exam if applying for year three.
  • Applicants must be in good standing at the medical school they are currently attending and must submit a Dean’s Letter of evaluation.
  • Preference will be granted to SD residents or those with strong ties to the state and are only reviewed by the Admissions Committee if there are available slots in the class. 
  • Applications for advanced standing may be requested from Admissions and are considered by the Admissions Committee from January 1 until February 1 of each year. 
  • The second year at USDSM begins the first week of August and the third year begins the first week of July.
