Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Seminar
LifeCircle Logo

Overview:
The purpose of this curriculum is to facilitate improved care at the end of life (EOL) through interdisciplinary education, to generate mutual recognition and valuing of interdisciplinary roles, and to introduce students to palliative care through home visits.   Five intensive educational sessions address knowledge, attitudes, and skill development in palliative care. Depending on the site of the seminar (Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Yankton), the structure of the course and composition of student participants (typically in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work, and chaplaincy) may vary.  Sessions combine readings and didactic education with experiential learning in interdisciplinary teams in the homes of people at end-of-life.  Interdisciplinary small group discussions encourage dialogue and self-reflection on EOL issues.

About the IPC Seminar Structure:
The five-week Interdisciplinary Palliative Care (IPC) Seminar was developed by faculty and health care professionals from Sanford School of Medicine, Augustana College, University of Sioux Falls, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, Sioux Falls Seminary, Avera McKennan Clinical Pastoral Education, Avera McKennan Hospice, and Sanford Hospice.

Begun in 2001, the Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Seminar is typically offered three times per academic year (Fall, Winter, Spring) in Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Yankton offers their class once a year.  Currently, students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, chaplaincy/clinical pastoral education, and social work participate in the IPC Seminar.   By May 2008, over 600 students from medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work, gerontology, and chaplaincy will have completed this unique seminar.

The seminar itself is taught by faculty representatives from The Sanford School of Medicine, Augustana College, Sioux Falls Seminary, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, University of Sioux Falls, and by health care professionals representing organizations such as Avera Clinical Pastoral Education, Avera McKennan Hospice & Palliative Care, and Sanford Hospice.

Typical Schedule of Events:
The content for the Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Seminar is divided into five sessions:

Session I        Living the reality of dying; Doing a home visit; Being in a team
Session II      Non-pain symptom management
Session III     Pain management
Session IV      Legal/ethical issues & advance directives
Session V       Cultural & spiritual diversity at End-of-Life

The timeline for each afternoon is planned accordingly:

1:00-2:20         Home Hospice Visit (with travel time)
Preparation for Discussion of Readings / Debriefing
2:30-3:50         Didactic Content
4:00-5:00         Debriefing and Small Group Discussion

Readings and special instructions are provided to the students through Moodle.  At the first session, students are assigned a partner for the home visits, and interdisciplinary groups (typically comprised of students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, social work, and chaplaincy ministry) are fashioned for the debriefing and discussion conversations.
