The Internal Medicine Residency Program prepares graduates to practice Internal Medicine in a variety of settings: consultative; inpatient, including the ICUs; and outpatient. The program places education first and clinical service second, resulting in a manageable case load and call schedule. |
The role of an Internist at Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota is defined as a specialist with the depth and breadth of knowledge to be a Consultant, especially in rural settings, and with the skills necessary to care for patients with multi-system complex illnesses in an inpatient and outpatient setting, including intensive care units. Established in 1975, the program has grown and prospered, attracting a high quality resident staff due to its excellent unique teaching climate, a strong clinically oriented program, and a dedicated faculty.
Accreditation The Internal Medicine Program received a 3-year accreditation Jan. 25, 2008. The program is accredited through the 2011 academic year.
