Sanford School of Medicine Basic Biomedical Sciences

Tuition, Stipend & Financial Aid

Tuition & Fees
  • Tuition and fees are calculated using a lot of variables
  • You will be expected to take courses each fall (9 credits), spring (9 credits) and summer (3 credits) session with an average credit load of 21 credits per year
  • Your expected tuition and fees bill as an out-of-state student will be approximately $11,506
  • Your expected tuition and fees bill as a resident of South Dakota will be approximately $5,514
Stipend
  • Upon full admission to our program, you will become eligible to receive a fellowship stipend
  • The stipend is currently $27,532 for the first full year
  • In addition, as a fellowship student you will qualify for reduced tuition
  • As a fully admitted graduate student receiving a fellowship, your tuition and fee bill for 21 credit hours will drop. It does not matter if you are an out-of-state student or a resident of South Dakota; if you are fully admitted to our program and receive a fellowship, you pay the same low amount for tuition and fees
  • Your expected tuition and fees bill as a student after receiving a fellowship will be approximately $3,800
  • Please visit the Graduate School schedule of tuition and fees for details on these expenses
Fellowship
  • Application for a fellowship is automatic upon admission to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program
  • The primary requirement for receipt of a fellowship is full admission
  • No additional paperwork is required
As a recipient of a fellowship, you are expected to work full time toward the Ph.D. degree
  • You may be asked to assist faculty in some teaching, but this typically is limited to less than 20 hours per year
  • Focusing your full attention on your studies is one of the ways we assist you in earning your Ph.D. almost two years earlier than the national average
Cost of Living
  • The cost of living in Vermillion is less than that of several nearby university cities
  • Excluding tuition and fees, The University of South Dakota calculates that it costs approximately $13,068 for you to live in Vermillion for one year
  • Living costs for on-campus graduate housing are slightly less than off-campus living costs
Other Financial Aid
  • As a full-time student enrolled in our graduate program, you may be eligible for other financial aid
  • However, almost all of these financial aid sources are only available to citizens or permanent residents of the United States
  • Financial aid support in the form of grants, work-study and loans may be available to you if you qualify
  • The University of South Dakota's Financial Aid Office manages this aspect of financial aid. There are strict deadlines for applying for some forms of financial aid, so you are encouraged to begin this process early
