Academic Training

The Academic Training core area provides training through a variety of programs at the Center for Disabilities. Academic training is also provided by courses taught by Center for Disabilities staff at The University of South Dakota. In addition, Center for Disabilities staff provide academic training through guest lectures in courses in a variety of departments at USD.

  • Community and Family Medicine 540 (FAMP 540) - Interdisciplinary Health Care Team
    This course examines the interdisciplinary, family-centered, culturally competent assessment, treatment and care of children and adults with developmental and other disabilities. A focus of the course is to provide students with a foundations in critical issues related to the field of disabilities and to expose students to roles and functions of various disciplines, which are typically involved in the delivery of services to children and adults with developmental and other disabilities.
  • Community and Family Medicine 541 (FAMP 541) - Clinic Experiences and Research in Maternal and Child Health
    This course is an interdisciplinary, family-centered, culturally sensitive study of the assessment, treatment and care of children with developmental disabilities and their families.
  • Community and Family Medicine 595 (FAMP 595) - Nutrition Practices for Special Needs Populations
    The material presented in this course includes dietetic training encompassing a variety of health care settings that provide services to children and adults with developmental disabilities.
  • Community and Family Medicine 596 (FAMP 596) - Leadership Practicum in Maternal and Child Health
    This course is designed to offer students the challenge of developing leadership skills, analyzing leadership models, and practicing leadership activities. The primary goal of the course is to provide students with examples, characteristics, and models of leadership. It provides the opportunity for students from various disciplines to learn from locally, regionally and nationally recognized leaders in the field of developmental disabilities.
  • Special Education 492/592 (SPED 492/592) - Materials and Methods: Prenatal Substance Exposure
    This course will introduce learners to the characteristics of individuals with prenatal substance exposure and provide methods and materials for teaching them. Lecture, demonstration, discussions, case studies, and small group projects will include the following topics: cognitive ability, environmental issues, communication, socialization, behavior, executive function, functional assessment and accommodations/modifications.
  • Special Education 493/593 (SPED 493/593) - Special Topic: Teaching Students with Prenatal Substance Exposure
    This course will introduce students to the characteristics of individuals with prenatal substance exposure and provide methods and materials for teaching them.
  • Special Education 735 (SPED 735) - Survey of Autism Spectrum Disorders
    This course will introduce students to the history, characteristics and theory associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Topics will include: characteristics, early indicators, definitions and diagnosis, etiology and research, and learning characteristics.
  • Special Education 736 (SPED 736) - Educational Assessment of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
    This course will introduce students to the primary areas of assessment that must be considered for an individual with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Survey and assessment instruments will be presented and discussed and early identification of Autism Spectrum Disorders will also be presented.
  • Special Education 737 (SPED 737) - Educating Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
    This course will introduce students to the primary areas that must be considered and focused on when planning educational programs for individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Topics will include: functional, spontaneous communication, social instruction, play/leisure, development of cognitive skills, strategies for dealing with challenging or problem behaviors, functional academic skills, and transitioning to adult-based services.
