College of Direct Support
The College of Direct Support (CDS) is a learning gateway for contemporary best practices for Direct Support Professionals. By incorporating web-based learning, backed by nationally recognized curricula, CDS is designed to promote a profession of direct support.
The Research and Training Training Center on Community Living, Institute of Community Integration in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota is the primary developer of the content and instruction design of the College of Direct Support.
Since May 1, 2004, the Center for Disabilities, the South Dakota Association of Community Based Services (SDACBS), the South Dakota Council on Developmental Disabilities and the South Dakota Division of Developmental Disabilities have collaborated to implement the College of Direct Support in all 19 Community Agencies in South Dakota, the South Dakota Developmental Center and for people choosing to self-direct their services through participation in Family Support 360.
Tom Scheinost, former Executive Director of SDACBS, stated: "Primarily as a result of our success in implementation of the CDS in South Dakota, I see potential for this training becoming a greater resource to consumers, families, special education programs, higher education/technical institutes, and a host of other entities that will, in the future, greatly have a positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities.
