NOFAS-SD - FASD WIC Project

The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders /Women, Infants and Children Project (FASD WIC Project) implements a screening for all pregnant women at identified Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) sites, brief intervention for those pregnant women who are identified as being at risk, and case management and follow-up processes for those pregnant women who are identified as being at high risk of prenatal alcohol use.

Previous research indicates that a majority of prenatal alcohol exposure in South Dakota occurs prior to a women's knowledge of her pregnancy, it also indicates that many women continue drinking throughout pregnancy. Prenatal alcohol exposure is the most common cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities in the United States and is 100% preventable.

This project provides the South Dakota Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, within the South Dakota Department of Human Services, with the resources to mobilize and build the capacity of South Dakota to provide a critical services to pregnant women in South Dakota who are at risk of prenatal alcohol use. The South Dakota Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse works with the Center for Disabilities along with an identified task force to mobilize and build the capacity of South Dakota to provide critical services to pregnant women in South Dakota who are at risk of prenatal alcohol use.
