NOFAS-SD - FASD in the SD Juvenile Justice System

The Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in the South Dakota Juvenile Justice System project is a collaborative effort between the Center for Disabilities and state and local agencies.

A task force has been identified to develop a model of care for people with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in the South Dakota juvenile justice system. The task force includes Department of Corrections staff, Department of Social Services staff, tribal representatives and South Dakota juvenile justice system staff. The task force will develop a needs assessment to determine an appropriate system of identification and intervention services for people with FASD in the South Dakota juvenile justice system.

The needs assessment is an attempt to understand FASD within the South Dakota juvenile justice system - specifically: target population, current delivery system, needs for services for those with FASD already in the system,  and possible intervention and referral trainings. The needs assessment will be developed to determine the appropriate strategic plan for the implementation of a system of identification and intervention to individuals with FASD in the South Dakota juvenile justice system.

FASD in the South Dakota Juvenile Justice System is conducted through a subcontract from the FASD Center for Excellence, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, United States Department of Health and Human Services.
