2012 Summer Autism Workshop
Visual Teaching and Classroom Strategies for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Locations and Dates
Sioux Falls, South Dakota - June 25-28, 2012 - St. Katharine Drexel School
Rapid City, South Dakota - July 9-12, 2012 - Kibben Kuster Elementary School

Workshop Description
These hands-on trainings focus on the principles of teaching individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder via structured visual instruction. Participants are given the opportunity to work with trainers and implement strategies with individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder in a model classroom setting.
This training includes approximately 25 participants at each site, usually 1-2 per agency or district in either Rapid City or Sioux Falls to participate in four days of training from five trainers. The participants are broken up into groups of five and each group spends each day receiving didactic instruction and practice working with an individual with an Autism Spectrum Disorder in a model classroom setting.  Students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder are selected in an attempt to represent the variance of abilities across the spectrum.  The five participant groups rotate amongst the five trainers and students over the course of four days. Each day of the training has a specific focus.  Topics include characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders, functional skills assessments, effective classroom management, assessment and development of play skills and daily living skills, as well as learning from individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families.
