MissionOur mission is to provide high quality education in family medicine, further the scholarship of our discipline, serve the patients of our community, advance the mission of our School of Medicine and support our University.
Medical Student Education
Our department teaches the second-year medical student course in family medicine as well as the third- and fourth-year family medicine clerkship. We also teach a variety of fourth-year electives, including geriatrics, clinical nutrition, health care for the underserved, sports medicine and international medicine. Our faculty members are committed to furthering scholarship in family medicine. They literally wrote the book, or at least a book chapter, on everything from ambulatory care to health prevention to tropical medicine. We also regularly make presentations at national conferences.
Our department provides residency education in Rapid City in conjunction with Regional Health and in Sioux Falls in conjunction with Avera and Sanford Health. Our program includes six residents per year in Rapid City and eight residents annually in Sioux Falls. For more information on these residency opportunities, click here.

- To introduce medical students to the discipline and specialty of family medicine and to family physicians.
- To provide quality, affiliated Family Medicine Residency Programs, which prepare graduates for practice in both rural and urban settings.
- To provide excellent teachers, mentors, role models, and advisors for our students and residents.
- To promote family medicine as a career choice for students and provide support and appropriate counseling in this regard.
- To demonstrate the importance of continuing, comprehensive, and coordinated patient care.
- To emphasize the biopsychosocial model of health care.
- To provide students with personal experience in the practice of rural medicine.
- To teach key concepts in preventive medicine, emergency medicine, geriatrics, nutrition, professionalism and ethics.
