Sanford School of Medicine Pediatrics

We are in the midst of significant growth as we strive to further develop our academic research focus and further expand our clinical and educational programs.

Sanford Children's Hospital

Our new children's hospital includes 146 beds, 58 neonatal intensive care beds and 12 pediatric intensive care beds. The hospital also is home to Sanford Children's Specialty Clinic. A new pediatric hospitalist program has been developed to care for children from out of the region who require hospitalization, to provide general pediatric consultation to any child hospitalized at our facility and to provide the majority of teaching of medical students and residents during pediatric rotations.

Pediatrics Residency

The Sanford Pediatric Residency Program has just been accredited by the Pediatric Residency Review Committee of ACGME. The program will admit six residents per year in a three-year program and employ a fourth-year chief resident.

The Sanford Children's Research Center has been established with two campuses - one in La Jolla, CA, at the Sanford Burham Institute for Medical Research, and the other in Sioux Falls. Dr. David Pearce, a neuroscientist of international stature, has been recruited to lead the Sioux Falls campus.  Dr. Pearce’s research focuses on Juvenile Batten Disease and other neurogenerative disorders of childhood. Basic research programs in the neurosciences, cancer biology, developmental cardiology and genetics, among others, are planned. Our other basic pediatric research effort focuses on a search for a cure for Type One diabetes.  This program, the Sanford Project, is Sanford’s signature research effort.
