Brechtels Power repeats
Facing a 5-2 deficit in the final round of competition, things looked bleak for defending champions Brechtels Power in the 2010 Residency Bowl Friday, January 29, at the Downtown Holiday Inn in Sioux Falls. The upstart Defer to Permanents from the Pathology Residency Program had rolled to the early lead, needing only one more correct answer to claim victory and end Family Medicine's dominance at the winter event.
But Brechtels Power summoned all the brainpower they could muster in the minds of Demetre Skliris, Joel Dunn, Joanna Burns, Scott Peterson, Chad Thury, and Chris Boschee, and rallied to tie the game at 5-5, forcing a sudden death overtime. They then prevailed by answering the final questions for a 6-5 victory and back-to-back championships. Along with the traveling Residency Bowl trophy, Brechtels Power earned $2,500 to be used to benefit their program. Brechtels Power topped Thought Police (Psychiatry) 6-4 in the first round, and handled Dr. Feelgood (Internal Medicine) 8-2 in the semifinals to reach the final round against Defer to Permanents. In addition to the Residency Bowl trophy, the winning team members were awarded $30 gift cards to Cinemark Theatres in Sioux Falls.
Defer to Permanents earned a strenuous 6-5 overtime victory against B Team (Family Medicine) in round one, followed by 9-1 triumph of Trichotillomanians (Psychiatry) in the semifinals. Defer to Permanents was awarded $2,450 to be utilized within the Pathology program.
A total of $7,500 was given to residency programs from the GME Office. The money is used for educational purposes at the discretion of each program and the participating team members. Residency Bowl attendees were also treated to dinner, and door prizes were awarded to lucky winners throughout the evening.
