VERMILLION, S.D. -- Kathy Anderson, an accountant for I.D. Weeks and Lommen Libraries at The University of South Dakota, was named August 2008 Career Services Employee of the Month.
"I didn’t expect it at all," admitted Anderson, who thanked her husband and co-workers in attendance during a reception in her honor at the library on Monday, Aug. 4. "It’s always an honor to be recognized by the people you work with."
Nominated for the award by David Hulkonen, emeritus director of libraries, Anderson was cited for her diligence as well as her accounting acumen while going above and beyond the call of duty for the University.
"She is absolutely vital to the financial services function for the libraries," noted Hulkonen. "Her ability to reconcile complex budgets and keep library records accurate and complete is legendary."
A native of Woodstock, Minn., Anderson recently celebrated her 30th year of working at The U. She began as an accounting clerk at the library but later moved to the position of accounting assistant. Anderson has since ascended to the role of accountant where she enjoys the daily challenges of working with students, staff and faculty. She recalled just how much technology has changed in her three decades at USD going from hand-typing vouchers to using the Banner software system to keep track of financial data.
"Kathy has adapted to a variety of systems and technologies at USD over the years," Hulkonen added, "and she continues to be on top of her job no matter what changes are demanded by the system."
"There have been lots of changes throughout the years – good changes," mentioned Anderson. "I didn’t think that I would be at the library this long, but USD is a good place to work."
She and her husband of 36 years, Jerry, reside in Vermillion. They have three grown sons; two are currently serving in branches of the military overseas in Iraq, and four grandchildren.
