VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota will host the 24th annual South Dakota Science Olympiad State Tournament on Saturday, April 5.
More than 200 students from South Dakota middle schools and high schools will compete in several science events featuring everything from hands-on labs and student built machines to outdoor activities and pencil and paper tests. The top teams from each division will advance to the 2008 National Science Olympiad Tournament, which will be held on the campus of George Washington University in Washington, D.C., this May.
In addition to the daylong competitions at USD, there will be open house activities, including demonstrations by members of USD’s Physics Club. South Dakota schools participating in this year’s Science Olympiad include Brandon Valley Middle School, Brookings High School, Deuel Middle and High Schools, Gayville-Volin Middle and High Schools, Madison High School, Mickelson Middle School in Brookings, Mitchell Middle and High Schools, Sacred Heart Middle School of Yankton, Spearfish Middle and High Schools, Timber Lake Middle School, Todd County High School, Vermillion Middle and High Schools, and Yankton Middle and High School.
All events for the Science Olympiad are determined at the national level. For the state tournament, faculty, staff, and students from USD organize and judge these events.
