VERMILLION, S.D. -- Whether it’s cheering on the Coyotes as fans at the DakotaDome or a commitment to academic excellence as students, the Walker family of Vermillion are ardent supporters of The University of South Dakota. They will be honored as the 2008 Family of the Year during Family Day activities at USD on Saturday, Nov. 8.
Nominated by Alexa Walker, a first year student at The U, the Walkers have worked hard to make their community and the University a better place, according to Alexa's nomination letter. "The time that they have put into supporting this great University impacted my decision to follow my mom's (Vicki) and my sister's (Heather) footsteps in attending school here," she added. Heather, a double major in pre-med and international studies, is a junior at The University of South Dakota while Alexa is a freshman majoring in communication disorders. In addition, Michael, the youngest Walker sibling, is already looking forward to enrolling at USD following his graduation from high school in 2010.
Although they are both graduates of Mount Marty College, Lanny and Vicki Walker have been consistent supporters of USD. Their affiliation with The U began when Vicki Walker attended the Sanford School of Medicine. Vicki currently works for the Human Services Center in Yankton, S.D., but was employed at Sanford Health in Vermillion from 2000 to 2008. Lanny, meanwhile, is part owner of Dakota PC Warehouse. Alexa also credits her father for teaching her to love the Coyotes as a youth.
