Keith Moore named Chief Diversity Officer at The U

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota announced today that Keith Moore has been named Chief Diversity Officer.

Moore, who has served as the Director of Indian Education for the South Dakota Department of Education since 2005, will begin his responsibilities at USD on Aug. 22. With almost two decades of experience in education, Moore said he’s looking forward to working with students, faculty and staff at The U.

"I look forward to building relationships that grow into partnerships for the benefit of USD's diverse students and staff. I look forward to meeting and working with new people as well as building upon already established associations," said Moore, who was a K-12 teacher and coach for more than 10 years before becoming an administrator. "Each step has broadened my educational vision and I look forward to the extraordinary opportunities USD has to offer."

In addition to serving as Director of Indian Education, Moore is project director for GEAR UP South Dakota. GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a federal grant program whose primary objective is to increase the number of first generation, low income Native American students prepared to enter and to succeed in postsecondary education.

"The opportunity to make an impact at the University level on behalf of students from diverse and challenging backgrounds motivates me," he explained. "I am excited to get started." Erin Contreras, adviser in the USD Academic Advising Center, will continue as USD’s Interim Chief Diversity Officer until Aug. 22.

A member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Moore is a native of Mission, S.D. He grew up in Kennebec, S.D., and graduated from Lyman High School. In 1985, as the team's point guard, he helped Lyman to a state basketball championship earning a scholarship to play basketball at Northern State University. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Northern State, Moore earned a master's degree in 2002 from South Dakota State University. He is completing a specialist degree in educational leadership at Montana State University this summer.

Moore and his wife, Kristie, have been married 10 years. They have four daughters: Isabelle, 7, Ava, 5, Lucy, 3, and Ruby, 1. A photo of Moore is available for download at www.usd.edu/urelations/images/Keith_Moore.jpg.
