VERMILLION, S.D. -- Eli Show has an assortment of duties in his part-time job for University Libraries on the USD campus. But the senior from Sioux Falls, S.D., has managed to assemble his time well in the Archives and Special Collections Department earning Student Employee of the Fall Semester at The U.
Show was honored during a reception at I.D. Weeks Library on Tuesday. As a student at USD, he has worked for Archives and Special Collections since May doing a variety of tasks from assisting patrons to preparing photographs for subzero preservation.
"I have a pretty interesting job," admitted Show, an art major who will graduate in May 2009. "I'm an eclectic person, so this job makes me really happy because it’s more suited toward what I do."
Show was nominated for the honor by Sarah A. Hanson, curator of photographs, University Libraries. Hanson noted Show’s work ethic as well as his talent and professionalism in working as a Student Library Assistant II.
"Eli is an outstanding example of what student talent, creativity and dedication can manifest,” Hanson stated in her nomination of Show. “In addition to all of the job responsibilities and duties, he has taken on projects that are statewide and above and beyond the breadth and scope of his immediate duties.”
In addition to working during the school year, Show also worked for University Libraries during the summer months. As Hanson pointed out, his contributions to the Archives and Special Collections Department go further than normal student work projects. Show has assisted with the research and selection of statewide scanning standards for the South Dakota Digital Library, according to Hanson.
"It will be impossible to replace Eli," described Anne Moore, Ph.D., Dean of Libraries. "To us, he's more than just a student employee; he's one of a kind."
Show is the fall 2008 recipient of the Student Employee of the Semester Award, which is presented by the Career Development Center. This award recognizes the contribution and exceptional performance of student employees.
